Kraus Notes Review

In case you didn’t know, Kraus Notes originated as a semester-long assignment for a graduate course in social media at New York University. We were assigned to write a blog in which the posts could pertain to an industry we were drawn to, an idea sparked from current events, or even our thoughts from assigned reading. As long as our blog tied in social media and public relations, we were golden.  The semester has almost ended and we have been asked to share our thoughts on the assignment and what we plan to do with our blogs once the semester is officially over.

The Objective of Kraus Notes

Before delving in, I want to take a look back at how Kraus Notes was formed. In our first blog post, we were assigned to write something about our current experience with social media and what we hoped to gain from the class. I wanted to have a better understanding of the way social media can be used strategically by companies and organizations.

I decided to take a more personal route when I wrote about New York State Senator Diane Savino’s gay marriage speech that went viral on YouTube and how the video aided in delivering the message of LGBT equality to a broader online community. Like many of my peers, I was devastated when gay marriage didn’t pass in New York State. Up until a few weeks ago, this was my most visited blog post.

My post was well received because it was obvious that I was writing about something I have passion for. I’ve been an activist for LGBT equality since I came out at 14 and a writer since I was 8. Writing and fighting for equality are the two things I love most. Encouraged by my professor’s feedback, I wrote a blog entitled, “Why the LGBT Movement Needs Social Media to Win Equality.” The purpose of Kraus Notes was formed: Kraus Notes explores the objectives, strategies, and tactics utilized by the LGBT community to deliver its message and win equality.

The following weeks, I continued to write about different LGBT organizations and issues the community faces and discuss how social media ties in to each. My blogs have covered the NoH8 campaign, the Unitarian Universalist’s ‘Standing on the Side of Love’ campaign, how singer Jason Mraz is coming forward as a straight ally, the strategic use of social media by the ACLU to aid in Constance McMillen’s fight to save the prom, and numerous other issues and organizations.

Kraus Notes Will Continue

Kraus Notes has been a challenge and a pleasure to write over the past fourteen weeks and I look forward to writing in the weeks to come. For my own purposes, Kraus Notes serves as a training platform to learn about different LGBT organizations that are fighting for equality. Through blogging about them, I am able to discover the objectives, strategies, and tactics they utilize to win equality and deliver them to my broader online community.  By writing this blog, I am hoping to bring about awareness of different LGBT organizations and how they are strategically using social media to win in the fight for equality.
